Craigton Cemetery Fatal Accident Inquiry [2018] FAI 3
The sheriff's determination in the Craigton Cemetery Fatal Accident Inquiry, following the death of a child when a large memorial headstone collapsed, has now been published. The Inquiry heard evidence from a number of expert witnesses and highlighted the divergence of expert opinion on the interpretation of the available industry guidance on the testing of stability of memorials. The Sheriff made a number of recommendations, including for the Scottish Government to draw up separate Scottish guidance on memorial safety in cemeteries for use by local authorities, with specific guidance on the appropriate inspection methods and standards for older, larger memorials. Glasgow City Council was represented at the Inquiry by Mark Stewart QC and Emma Toner.
A copy of the determination can be found here.
